I spent about 45 minutes today watching a stunning male LAPLAND LONGSPUR at close range in upper Oak Bay Park. This bird showed all the characteristic field marks for the species, including the striking winter facial pattern, somewhat rust-tinged greater coverts, long primary tips, and strongly notched tail with white outer feathers. The black bib was flecked with white. I don’t know how many records there are for overwintering Lapland Longspurs in Jefferson County, but this late in the season, I imagine he might stay. If anyone is interested, he showed a strong preference for the lawn around the parking area, returning to it over and over again after being flushed by cars, walkers and dogs, so it’s possible he could be relocated tomorrow.

On my bird walk in the Kai Tai park, I was looking for the barred owl which we have been seeing here, but instead I found what I first thought was a great horned owl, so I walked home and got Ron Sikes and Robert Leporati to come back and look with me , we were joined by Tim W as well, and after a good long look, and then consulting our Sibleys we all agreed it was a long earred owl, if so , we believe it is a new species to add to the Kai Tai bird list.

This afternoon Artemis and I saw a Bohemian Waxwing near the Jefferson Scott Street northeast corner of the walking trail that leads to the Food CoOp with a large flock of Cedar Waxwings and 200 or so American Robins forging the holly trees red berries. The reddish under tail covert was the key to finding the difference between the two species. Cedar Waxwing have yellowish under tail coverts. The frozen Lagoon allowed Norther Shovelers, Mallards, and American Coots to sit on top of the ice along the northwest shoreline together.

Today my friend Jerry reported seeing the Bohemian Waxwings in the large trees near the north east corner of the holly farm above the CoOp. Last week Dan had located them in trees within the Kah Tai Lagoon Nature Park and just across from the CoOp parking. The Bohemians are mixed in with a flock of Cedar Waxwings. They are distinguished by their cinnamon colored under tail coverts, white splotches on their folded primaries, grayer cast, and larger size than the Cedar Waxwings.

Location: Field east of Carlsborg (Sequim) & field off of Port Williams Road (Sequim) Account, Region & State: OlympicPen, west WA (USA)
Mary reporting for our swan study team of Kendra and Kathy. They found 18 swans, 3 were juveniles. 12 swans, all adults, were in the field east of the airport by Carlsborg. They saw 6 swans, 3 juveniles, in the middle of a large group of snow geese and cackling geese in the field just east of the lavender farm off the Port Williams road. They estimated over 100 snow geese and 300 cackling geese. Several of the swans were resting on their breasts so that it was difficult to be sure that was all but they were close enough to see the 6. It was quite a sight! The sound was awe-inspiring as well. The elk herd was moving on the other side of the road north of the road. We live in such a great place.

I believe I just watched a scrub jay bathing in my birdbath. I am an experienced birder. I watched the entire time; then consulted my western Washington field guide. I also heard it call numerous times, and I compared what I heard to Audubon recordings. I have never seen a bird like this in my yard before and I have lived here thirteen years. The bird splashed enthusiastically for five to eight minutes, calling many times. Then it flew up into my holly tree. I would love to get confirmation from others out there in the area!

I led a short field trip with approximately 20 people around Kah Tai. We had 6 species of waterfowl that were on the lagoon including Mallards, Northern Pintails, Gadwalls, Northern Shovelers, American Wigeons and Ruddy Ducks. Also had side by side comparisons of Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs. There were about a dozen Yellow-rumped Warblers that were flitting about the poplars. They are probably just arrived in the last day or two. The species count for our walk was 25.

In response to the query by P Lee about crane sightings - we do not recall the exact date, but on or near last weekend (July 9-10), Rick briefly observed a large grayish bird flying with its neck stretched out like a crane rather than in the tucked heron position. We were at Sims and 10th near the Master Gardeners garden, looking toward the boatyard. The bird flew behind the trees before I could see it.

It was a very nice group of six and very good birding at Lake Anderson where we met at 9 AM. Three highlights were 1) Just as we were leaving the parking area someone spotted a male Western Tanager and we all got to view it and heard them calling throughout the walk. 2) We spotted a female American Goldfinch in the middle of a tree not far from a grassy trail as she was flying back and forth to her nest. 3) Nearby was a Willow Flycatcher that one of the group identified and we learned the typical call. (That was a new one for me.) Birds spotted and I hope I did not forget any - Cedar Waxwings, Pacific Wrens, Wilsons Warblers, Swainsons Thrush, Western Tanager, Song Sparrow, Common Yellow-throat, Willow Flycatcher, Turkey Vulture, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Black-capped Chickadee, Goldfinches, Purple Finch. Birds heard but not seen - Stellers Jay, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Black-headed Grosbeak, Brown Creeper, Pacific Slope Flycatcher. It was a very nice group and one member was a fairly new birder which made it even more fun to share in the fun.

The nesting box used by VG Swallows had to come down for siding work on our house. It had many small and straight twigs inside, 2 to 3 inches long. They found it, removed the shavings (house cleaning), and dropped them on the ground right below the house. FYI, if you are thinking of putting up a box for the swallows.

Todays field trip had good conditions calm and cool with overcast. We were 21 persons. There were 35 species noted. The migrant shorebirds seen were the Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Long-billed Dowitchers, and Least Sandpipers. There were 7 species of waterfowl and several Pied-billed grebes including some still bearing juvenile plumage. We saw a couple large groups of Gadwall ducklings with their moms. Also about 40 juvenile Hooded mergansers were on the lagoon. The most unusual duck was a bright blue-billed male Ruddy duck with a black head and body. The Audubon Encyclopedia mentions a study by Gross (1965) where only 29 species of North American birds have observed melanism as compared to 304 species exhibiting albinism. Two new arrival migrants were a pair of Buffleheads and a lone Ring-necked Duck. A Virginia Rail made a brief flight in front of our group as it headed from one clump of bull rushes to another. Some songbird migrants was a group of 5 juvenile Common Yellowthroat warblers seen in the bulrushes near our viewpoint. Near the end of our outing a chirping Purple Martin drew our attention to a Pregrine Falcon the martin was pursuing over our head. They disappeared down the lagoon to the west.
